AI for Africa, by Africa

Building inclusive, culturally-relevant AI solutions rooted in African realities.

ai for africa by africa

While global AI innovation is accelerating, much of it is built on Western-centric datasets, models, and assumptions—making it ill-suited to Africa’s languages, economies, and cultural contexts.

And if we don’t actively shape the development of AI to reflect African voices, needs, and knowledge systems, our communities in Kenya – and Africa- risk being marginalized by technologies that were never, never designed for them.

That’s why one of our core impact areas is championing the development of AI technologies for Africa, by Africans.

How We’re Creating Impact:

  • Developing AI in African Languages
We support initiatives and projects that train AI models in African languages—enabling voice assistants, translation tools, and content platforms that actually understand and serve African users. From Kiswahili to Yoruba, Kikuyu to Luganda, Amharic to Kinyarwanda, language equity is key to digital inclusion.
  • Building African AI Tools
We support the creation and promotion of AI tools tailored to Kenya and African challenges—like precision agriculture for smallholder farmers, AI-powered health screening for clinics in very remote areas, and smart logistics for local traders.
  • Boosting African Data Sovereignty
Through our programs, we’re helping to build high-quality, local datasets that reflect African experiences, environments, and knowledge—laying the foundation for AI models that are accurate, ethical, and representative.
  • Leveling the Playing Field for Small Businesses
We help small and micro businesses access AI tools that would otherwise be unaffordable or unavailable—empowering them to compete with large corporations and digitally transform their operations. Whether it’s automating customer engagement, optimizing inventory, or generating digital marketing content, we help make AI accessible at the grassroots.
  • Preserving and Promoting African Cultures
AI has the power to document, preserve, and even revive African cultural heritage—but only if it’s built with our stories, languages, and traditions in mind. From digitizing folklore to training models on indigenous knowledge systems, our work ensures that African cultures aren’t lost in translation or erased by algorithmic bias. Without this pillar, AI risks becoming another force of cultural erasure.
  • Growing African Content Online
We actively promote African-generated content in AI platforms, ensuring that our stories, data, and digital footprints are part of the future internet—and not overwritten by foreign narratives.

Africa must not just adopt AI—it must actively shape it.
That’s why we are working with partners to ensure that AI technologies respect, reflect, and empower African communities—making technology a force for equity, cultural preservation, and homegrown innovation.
